deep in her voice

we were young then

always the best ever excuse

where nothing is fixed

told her i’d be leaving

caught the uncare

deep in her voice

the laughter of disbelief

thinking i had no choice

but to stay for her

that half life of nothing

no love going on

left a note on a Monday

for her return to find

thank you for the beginning

this is the end

put a big X last line

no signature no farewells

went off to try again

next time i saw her

wedding ring & babies

there in the stroller

she’d found ideal happiness

i was yesterdays man

still struggling striving

yet to find my own way

seemed she had no regrets

never thought to ask if

i might have mine

we were young then

always the best ever excuse
