Mentoring

  1. Support is gained from managers in the organisation
  2. The mentoring programme is linked to the strategic aims of the organisation.
  3. The mentoring programme is linked to the wider development programme for staff in the organisation.
  4. The organisation provides support for both the mentor and mentee for various aspects of the process including: access, meetings and promotion.
  5. Training is available for mentors and may include:
  • the nature of the mentoring relationship
  • the qualities and skills required to be an effective mentor
  • tools and techniques for mentoring
  • adaptability in the mentoring relationship
  • action planning
  • problem solving.
  1. Training is available for mentees and may include:
  • clarity about what the organisation expects from the mentoring programme
  • what the organisation expects from the mentee
  • what can be expected from a mentor
  • what the mentor will expect from the mentee.
  1. The mentoring relationship operates within an ethical code or set of guidelines that are determined by the organisation.
  2. A mentoring contract is agreed for the parties to use.
  3. Mentors and mentees are matched through a third party, with the needs of the mentee as a key part of the matching process.  
  4. An evaluation of the programme through mentors and mentee experiences is conducted and includes consideration of both the relationship and the process.
